Crestview Crash Knocks Out Power, Driver Arrested For Drugs

April 5, 2018

Crestview, FL — A Tuesday afternoon traffic crash did more than knock out power in the Brackin Street area. It also sent a Crestview man to jail on narcotics charges.

Rayshawn Durrell Shoffner

Rayshawn Durrell Shoffner, 24, was charged with four counts of unlawful possession of a controlled substance after he crashed his 2017 Kia sedan into a utility pole at the intersection of Brackin Street and First Avenue East, snapping the pole in two and bringing down a cascade of cables.

After Gulf Power shut off electricity to the downed cables, a Crestview K9 unit at the scene performed an open air sniff around the car, at which time Officer Sonic alerted on the passenger side front door, indicating the presence of narcotics.

His partner, Officer Jay Seals, then discovered a small drawstring bag that yielded nearly 5 grams of suspected heroin, .79 grams suspected cocaine, and 2.15 grams of suspected methamphetamine.

A cigarillo composed of suspected marijuana, a digital scale, commonly used to weigh narcotics, two bottles of liquor, and more than $150 in small denomination bills were also discovered in the vehicle.

The suspected narcotics were field tested and yielded presumptive positive results for each. As a result of the crash, an estimated 190 Gulf Power customers were without power for more than 4 hours, including the Crestview Rehabilitation Center on First Avenue East.
