OCSO Locates Wanted Armed Robbery Suspect During Traffic Stop

A man wanted in connection with an armed robbery in July is now in custody after being spotted by an Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office deputy during a traffic stop.

22-year old Dion Latwon Wingate of Green Acres Boulevard was a passenger in a car stopped on Scottsdale Court early this morning. The deputy recognized Wingate, who had an active warrant for the armed robbery of the Shell Gas Station on Green Acres Boulevard July 22nd of this year.
Investigators say Wingate entered the store at approximately 3am on July 22, 2017 wearing a dark colored hooded sweatshirt, dark pants, black shoes and a Tampa Buccaneers hat. While inside the store, Wingate brandished a revolver handgun and demanded the clerk to open the cash register and give him the money in the cash drawer. Wingate entered the store approximately 45 minutes before but because there were customers inside told the clerk he had forgot his money and departed the store.
Based on leads developed during the investigation, deputies contacted the residents at 423 Green Acres Rd. While at the residence, they were informed that Wingate did reside there. Deputies further discovered a revolver, Tampa Bay Buccaneers hat and gray jacket outside of the residence.
While reviewing surveillance video from the store, deputies were able to identify evidence left in the parking lot which could help identify the suspect. After sending the evidence to FDLE. Upon its return, it positively identified Dion Latwon Wingate as the suspect. At which time a warrant was applied for.
Along with armed robbery, Wingate is charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
