Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over

August 23, 2017

The travel week leading up to Labor Day and the Labor Day weekend are typically among the deadliest travel times on U.S. roadways.

The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office is taking part in the national Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign, which runs through September 4th. The goal is to prevent drunk driving accidents and raise awareness about the dangers of driving impaired.

Here are some fundamental safety tips from the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration:

  1. Those who plan to drink should designate a driver—someone who will not drink alcohol—before going out.
  2. Take mass transit, a taxi, Uber, or ask a sober friend to drive home.
  3. Spend the night where the activity is held.
  4. Always buckle up, every ride, regardless of seating position in the vehicle. The seatbelt is a rider’s best defense against an impaired driver.

Those who are intoxicated and traveling on foot are encouraged to take a cab or Uber, or have a sober friend or family member drive them to their doorstep.

If you see an impaired driver, please contact the OCSO or nearest law enforcement agency.
