Traffic Crash Turned Deadly Shooting Has Holmes County Sheriff’s Office Puzzled

March 25, 2024
Bonifay, Fla — The Holmes County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a traffic crash that ended up with two people in custody and a good Samaritan dead.
According to a news conference held by Sheriff John Tate, shortly before 4am Tuesday, March 25th, a father and son were traveling North on Hwy 173 in a car when for an unknown reason lost control and wrecked at the intersection of Jones Rd which is Northeast of Bonifay FL.
Shortly thereafter, who the Sheriff’s Office is describing as a good Samaritan, pulled up on the wrecked vehicle, which was flipped upside down, and got out to check on them. One of the male occupants in the vehicle for unknown reasons, shot and killed the good Samaritan.
The 911 call, which came in at 4:03 am, is believed to have been placed by one of the suspects, who spoke irrationally and was talking out of his mind during the call.
Sheriff Tate would not identify any of the people involved other than saying the two suspects in the car were father and son, one of which had an active warrant out of Calhoun County for Aggravated Battery. The Sheriff did not identify the good Samaritan that was killed by neither name nor sex only calling the person a victim.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement responded to process the scene for evidence and to assist in the investigation.
Both suspects were transported to Southeast Medical Hospital in Dothan with minor injuries.
When asked, Sheriff Tate stated he is unaware of the motive behind the shooting and the victim and suspects do not appear to have any connection with each other.
A press conference will be held at a later time providing more details of the incident once the Sheriff’s Office meets with the State Attorney’s Office.
