Crestview Man Arrested in Connection with Saturday’s Homicide Investigation

Crestview, FL — The Crestview Police Department has charged 37-year-old Johnny Lee Akins Jr. with Murder in connection with an incident that occurred on East Walnut yesterday.

Akins is accused of shooting and killing 42-year-old James D. Matthews of Holt.

After the incident, Akins transported the victim in his vehicle from the residence on East Walnut Avenue to Escambia County where it was later discovered partially on fire near a gas station, the news release stated. The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office responded and made contact with Akins who appeared to be under the influence.

Akins was detained by the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office, after they found drugs in plain view in the vehicle. A further search of the vehicle revealed the deceased victim in the trunk of the car.

Akins was transported to the Escambia County Jail where is being held without bond awaiting extradition to Okaloosa County for the Crestview Murder.

A search of the Florida Department of Corrections shows two illegal drug convictions and a burglary conviction, all originating from Okaloosa County.
