Crestview Police Identify Deceased Body Found Near Interstate

Crestview, FL — More details have been released concerning the dead body found Sunday afternoon near Interstate 10 and Hwy 85.

The Crestview Police Department identified the body found dead Sunday afternoon in a wooded area adjacent to Wal-Mart Super Store and GameStop as 60 year old George M. Fanning of Crestview, FL.

Brian Hughes, Public Information Officer for the Crestview Police Department, advised the police department received a call at 12:08 p.m. Sunday afternoon from a man who reported that while walking his dog, the animal led him to a tent in the woods near Wal-Mart and the GameStop store. There he found the victim, whom he believed appeared to have been dead for some time.

The news release stated although the death is not considered suspicious, a crime scene was established as a precaution while officers investigated the area and nothing suspicious was found.

The state medical examiner was notified shortly after police arrived on the scene and took possession of the deceased. The cause of death is pending autopsy.

The wooded area between the businesses and the interstate are known to police to be popular camping places for homeless people and transients passing through the area.

The scene was cleared after the investigation at 4:10 p.m. Traffic on the interstate, S.R. 85 or around neighborhood businesses was not affected during the investigation.
