Crestview, FL — Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office deputies responding to reports of a loud explosion near Crestview last night discovered a Chevy Silverado truck fully engulfed in flames on Mare Creek Drive.

While speaking with the resident, 28-year-old Kevin Robert Murphy, he spontaneously told deputies he had set his truck on fire. At that point Murphy was placed under arrest, searched and informed of his Miranda Rights.

During the search, Murphy had in his possession a glass smoking device commonly used to smoke methamphetamine and a small amount of methamphetamine folded up in a dollar bill in his wallet. When asked, Murphy admitted to using the pipe to smoke meth and that the stuff in the dollar bill was crystal meth.

When questioned about his vehicle, Murphy advised he poured gasoline in the cab of the truck, under the truck and then poured a trail of gasoline leading away for the truck and set it on fire and burned his truck down. When asked why, Murphy stated he wanted to give the sheriff’s office something to do and wanted to give himself an early Christmas present.

No one was injured by the fire. However, an adjacent vehicle and building suffered minor damage. Dorcas Fire Department also assisted by responding to the fire and quickly extinguishing the blaze.

Murphy was charged with arson, possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia and remains in the Okaloosa County Jail with no bond at this time.
